Account

  1. How do I change my email notifications? 
    Go to your Account Settings page, under the section titled 'Notifications' select your options and click save.
  2. How do I change my password? 
    To change your password, visit your Account Settings page and enter a new password in the Password (twice) to change your password.
  3. How do I reset my password? 
    To reset your password, click here and enter your email. We'll send you a reset password link.
  4. How do I remove my account? 
    Go to Account Settings , and click on 'Remove' at the bottom."
  5. Facebook Connect is not working for me. 
    If you are having any problems with Facebook Connect, send us an email at bugs@academia.eduexplaining what is going wrong, and we'll fix it.
  6. I no longer have access to my registered email address, how can I access my account? 
    If you remember your password, you can still log in with the existing email address and to go academia.edu/settings to edit your email address. If you have forgotten your password, contactfeedback@academia.edu and request a change of email address (tell them your full name, current email address and the new email address). Once you have confirmation of the change you can use the new email address to reset your password.

Webpage

  1. How do I change my department or university? 
    You can change your affiliation details by editing your webpage. Click on your name in the top navigation bar, then click on 'Edit' next to your About link. You can change your university or department from there.
  2. Can I affiliate with multiple institutions? 
    Yes. Visit your edit page and you can add an affiliation from there.
  3. I can't find my Academia.edu page on Google. 
    Google sometimes takes a while to update its index with new pages on the web. However, if you link to your Academia.edu page from the website of your department or college (ask your department IT officer), that will speed up this process dramatically. It will also mean that your Academia.edu page appears significantly higher up in the search results.
  4. What are keywords? 
    Keywords are search queries that people have used on Google, and other search engines, to find your pages on Academia.edu.
  5. How do I add a paper? 
    Click on your name in the top navigation bar, then click on 'edit' next to your About link. You'll find an 'Add Paper' link in the left column.
  6. How do I delete a paper? 
    Hover over 'Papers' on the left-hand side of your page, and click 'edit'. There are 'edit' and 'delete' links next to each paper.
  7. I get an error when I upload my paper. 
    If you are using an institutional connection, sometimes institutional firewalls can block file uploads. Try uploading the file from a different internet connection. If the upload still fails, email us at bugs@academia.edu.
  8. How do I add a photo? 
    Click on your name in the top navigation bar, then click on 'edit' next to your About link. On the next screen click on Upload Photo.
  9. How do I add/remove research interests? 
    Hover over 'Research Interests' on the left-hand side of your page, and click 'edit'. Then start typing in the box to find research interests to add. If you want to create one that isn't there, type it in, and press 'return'.
  10. How do I change my CV? 
    To change your CV you must first remove your current CV. To remove your CV click on your name in the top navigation bar, then click the 'edit' link next to 'CV' on your edit page, and lastly click the "Change/Remove Curriculum Vitae" at the bottom of the page. Once your old CV is removed you can add a new CV by clicking the button 'Click here to Upload a Curriculum Vitae'
  11. About page/Recent Updates page 
    Only your logged-in followers will see your Recent Updates page when they visit your page. Other people, i.e. non-followers, or logged-out followers, see your 'About' page when they visit your page.
  12. What does "Tagging a Paper" do? 
    When you tag a paper, your paper appears in the News Feeds of all the people following that research interest. It also appears in the Papers section of the Research Interest page in question. Tagged papers get twice as many page views as untagged papers.
  13. Do I have copyright to upload papers to my profile page? 
    According to Sherpa , which tracks journal publishers' approach to copyright, 90% of journals allow uploading of either the pre-print or the post-print of your paper.

Analytics

  1. What is Rank? 
    Rank indicates the position of your academia.edu page in the search results (e.g. on google) for the specific keywords.
  2. Why isn’t there a keyword for all searches? 
    We display keywords whenever we have the data provided to us, if they keyword is missing then the search engine has not supplied the referring information.
  3. Why can't I see the IP address of the visitors? 
    Due to data privacy legislation we are unable to show this information.
  4. I want to see all my stats. 
    To access your stats for a longer period than 30 days, please click here to go to your analytics dashboard and then click 'Export as .csv' at the top right of the overview page.
  5. What does referring site mean? 
    The referring site is the site which the visitor was viewing prior to arriving on your page.

Following

  1. What does it mean to be following someone's work? 
    When you follow another person's work, it means you will see their research updates in your News Feed. For example, you'll see when they upload a new paper, or post a status update, or add a new research interest, or make other changes to their Academia.edu webpage.
  2. How do I stop "following" someone? 
    Go to your webpage, in the right navigation click the 'Following' link, then click the 'Stop following' link on the right side of the page.

Journals

  1. How do I add a journal? 
    Go to http://journals.academia.edu/ and click ‘Suggest a journal” on the top right of the page. If you do not see the journal appear, email support@academia.edu stating the name of the journal you added.
  2. How do I add content to the journal page? 
    Our journals feature uses RSS feeds to gather the contents of each journal. If there a no contents displayed or you believe some contents are missing please contact support@academia.edu.
  3. I am the editor of a journal, how do I control the page? 
    There is no admin access for our journal pages as all of the content is generated from RSS feeds. If the background information or contents are inaccurate, please contact us to let us know at support@academia.edu.
